GSM in Canada - I hate Rogers, let me count the ways

If you are a traveller and need your mobile you're probably like me, and feel corralled into having to use Rogers as your wireless provider. Rogers is the only provider of GSM phones in Canada (Bell and Telus are CDMA hold outs). And despite what their adds say, Rogers has the most dropped calls, bad service areas, bad service and crappiest plans. They're also holding the iphone hostage since they are the only GSM provider. I stumbled upon a post that claims there are rumors that pretty much everyone will be a GSM provider by 2012. This is great from a competition perspective...but it's still 3 years out. That means, if I want to continue to be able to connect with my mobile when I go to China, Abu Dhabi, UK, et al, I'll need to stay with Rogers for at least the next 3 years. So...since I'm not currently under contract...I guess I might as well suck it up. Also, since I have to stay for 3 years I might as well try to beat them up and get a deal on an iphone, even though I'm a BlackBerrier at the moment. Why would I change ? The cool factor. Iphones are freakin' cool.

Here is the post about the Bell/Telus rumor stuff.

Who's the Best Villian - Darth Vader or Benjamin Linus ?

This could be the ultimate show down - Ben Vs. the O.G. Darth Vader.

Benjamin Linus is the bad boy leader of the "others" on the lost island. And Darth Vader was the ultimate bad guy in the late 70's and early 80's

Who's a better bad guy ?
  • We'll need to look at both characters and compare.

  • Ben's mother died at birth and he was raised by a dead beat dad. Darth didn't have a dad, and was raised by his mom.
  • Ben was a bit of a wussy when he was young, so was Darth (any boy that goes by Annie and doesn't mind, is a wiener in my books).
  • Ben Killed his dad and all his people. Darth hunted down and killed all the Jedi.
  • Ben seems to working for Jacob. Darth does the bidding of the Emperor
  • Ben doesn't care about the lives of others (case in point, when Jack asks him about the other people on the plane and what will happen to them, he says "who cares"). After Darth captures the princess in Star Wars he tells his dude to "send a distress signal, report that all on board were dead", in other words, kill them all
  • Ben seems to be always one step ahead. Darth has the force.
  • Ben stood by and watched his fake daughter be killed. Darth would have killed his son if he didn't join him.
  • Ben has the Island. Darth has the Death Star.
  • Ben gets caught a lot and gets his ass kicked. Darth force chokes people.

I think at the moment Darth is in the lead, although I'd say that since we haven't yet seen the end of LOST and we don't know what the final story will be for Ben, we'll have to leave the final decision until 2010.

There is nothing better in the world

There is nothing better than listening to the little man laugh. Especially when something has tickled his funny bone, usually something random, and he shrieks in uncontrollable laughter. It's always infectious and I can't help but join in until my sides hurt. I could have the worst day imaginable and it evaporates as soon as I hear the beginnings of a giggle.

This has to be the best instructional video on how to play pocket jacks. Enjoy !

I agree with Phil

I agree with Phil. We somehow live in a world where people do not take responsibility for their own actions.

Heroes - Save The Cheerleader, Save The World, save me from having to buy all the past seasons

I pride myself on being a geek/nerd, and I'm usually up on my sci-fi, nerd t.v. and movies. Alas, I've neglected Heroes, and after watching today's episode, I feel like I've started watching a new show all together. It would be the same if you just dropped into LOST, or tried to watch twin peaks after missing a few weeks.
When did Suresh and Ando get powers ? Why is Nathan heading the weirdo black ops team ? Who's the new bald dude ? Why does Sylar have a side-kick ?
I'm so lost. Looks like I'll have to spend a weekend watching past episodes online.

No Limit Hold 'em

Some of you may know, I've taken up a hobby. That being, Texas hold 'em. I've played [sort of] for a bunch of years here and there, never really taking it serious. Kind of a hit and miss for fun (usually when out with friends after a few beers). The best I ever played was to make the final table of a tournament at the Sahara in Vegas a few years back. Recently, I've decided to put in a effort to learn and play properly. I know, just like anything you want to become good at, you will need to invest some $$$ in some fashion (call it education). So far, I seem to be investing time. My last 2 sessions were all about grinding for cards. I did a 10 hour stint to make 29$ and last night was about 5.5 hours to spend 1$. As far as I'm concerned, these are both winning nights. I got to play/learn for hours and it didn't cost me a cent. My biggest area of concern is confidence in reading people. I can be pushed off cards fairly easy and I don't have confidence in bluffing just yet (oddly enough, I have no problem doing it online). For example, last night I had A-10 clubs. The guy next to me leads out with 10$ so I call. I assume he may have a mid pair or high connectors. The flop comes 3 (spades) 8 (diamonds) and 10 (diamonds) - I get top pair, no luck on the suit. The guy next to me bets out 10$ again, I think this is just a continuation bet to show strength and since I have top pair with an Ace kicker, I feel....ok at the point. The turn is a King of diamonds. The guy looks right at me, checks and says "there's your flush"...many things went through my head...1) this guy hit the flush and he's trying to egg me on 2) he's got kings and he's trying to see if I have the flush or 3) he has nothing and really does believe I have the flush. What I should have done at this point (knowing the outcome) was lead out with 25$ which would have represented the flush and would have pushed him off. What I did was cower, thinking he hit the flush so I checked. The River card came and made the dudes hand. This is a prime example of where I'm weak. In my mind, I knew I should have represented the flush as my first assumptions about the guys hand were correct. But my inexperience got the best of me. As i said, the night was 5.5 hours of education for 1$ and I intend to use it.

Big Man Learning To Walk

Even though he's not really crawling yet, we figured, what the hell, let's get the boy walking. We picked up a kiddie shopping cart and put the boy to work. We've got a bit of time to baby proof the house since he has a ways to go before he's "walking". Although, he's become much faster with the land swimming and I think he'll be doing a full fledged crawl any day (this means added excitement for Brook during the day).

Lazy Long Weekend Post

The long weekend was not long enough. We did a bit of shopping on Saturday, hit a movie on Sunday (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button...not a bad movie, worth seeing), and hung out Monday (River's Great Grandparents came by for a visit). I'm hoping this week goes by fast...I'm feeling like I need another few days to re-charge.

I'll be trying my hand at cooking Tandori Chicken at some point during this week. That should prove interesting.

Oh My God....Is the end of the 'other' Pheonix ?

I have to believe this is an act....

I've been so neglectful

I've realized that I've neglected to update my blog as much as I have in the past. >slap my hands<. The reasons are that we've done a couple quick vacations and work/play has been busy the last little while. I'll try to do better.
So...let's get you caught up to speed. L.A. was awesome. The hotel was great, the food at Koi was awesome (Sushi at home just can't hold a candle), and it was good to connect with old friends.
Vegas was a great time. We arrived at 7:30 and took a shuttle to the hotel. This time around we stayed at the Imperial Palace (it's a dump, but it has friendly staff and it's in the heart of the strip). Thank god they upgraded us from the crack houses in the back to the tower. After cleaning ourselves up, we hit the gambling floor running.
Funny thing...I had planned to play a lot of poker on this trip...catch a few the end, I didn't play one hand. Why?
We find the best way to start Vegas is with a drink. So we sat down at a video slot [we call them carny games - in reference to the games you play at a carnival that you win stuffed toys, which are fixed]. We pumped in a 20$, ordered up a few beverages, and sat back and watched the fire-works. If memory serves, the first nice machine paid us 60$. So we drank up and moved on. We ended in Paris and played a Star Trek Video Slot...awesome game. This machine had to be set up loose. It paid out every time we played it. And we noticed quickly that the same people were playing this machine every day and, like us, winning. I think we took 450$ out of that machine alone. This is how the weekend progressed. No Poker, just carny games.
We met up with a friend Friday night and continued the beverage-carny game winning streak, which also carried over onto a carny table game. Some game by the name of Mississippi Poker. Brook and I both won 100$ (my friend and his girlfriend both lost).
Saturday night we took a break from the winning and did a tour of the restaurant at Paris (awesome view of the Bellagio fountains), sat through 90 minutes of a time share presentation at Planet Hollywood (can you believe we bought a package from them ??? Awesome deal though...I have to assume the recession has hit them and they're workin' some deals to get the sales), lost 125$ of the free money from the presentation in 3 rolls on the craps table, had a $$$$$ lunch at Spaggo, drinks on the roof top patio of the VooDoo lounge at the Rio (see picture above) and went to see Le Reve at Wynn (not a bad show).
Soon after the show, the carny game winning streak was on again. We hit for a high payout on HexBreaker 2 (not as high as you might think since it was only a penny slot)...and my friend hit 108 free spins on the machine I told him to play (he was bitter since he had only bet MIN bet). We still both walked away with a few hundred, which I proceeded to dump on the craps it was decided, only carny games for the rest of the trip.
After all was said and done, with the food, booze, tips. $$$ lunch, buffets, taxis, huge slushy booze drinks on the strip, shuttles, snacks, booze, late night steak and eggs, booze, losses on the craps table, Brook and I only spent 50$ per day. I'd say that was a winning weekend !
I've been invited for a return trip in March with one of the guys we met down there...we'll see if I can rustle up a 'get out of jail free' card.
Little tip: DO NOT GO TO THE IMPERIAL PALACE BUFFET. It's the worst on the strip.

Big Boy is taking over the office

The little guy and his mom have been coming to the office (mom had to help out with some data entry). And it didn't take long for the big man to take over his dads office and start doing his job. As the caption shows..."no time for chit chat dad, these projects need closure, now go get me a bottle, a new diaper, and get the hell out !".

Christian Bale rages out (lots of F bombs)

If you haven't yet heard it, during the filming of Terminator: Salvation, Christian Bale had a little rage out. Apparently the director of photography was walking around behind the set in Bales line of sight [obvious rookie move] thus causing a distraction. Obviously this was not this dudes first faux pas and Batman took it upon himself to give the lad a tongue lashing (there is one second where it sounds like he actually goes after the guy). Honestly, I'm not sure that people should be all down on Bale...he's a pro and wants his people to act professional...all we got was this little snippet...who knows, the dude could be a real ass and possibly caused a bunch of distractions on the set. OR, Bales just a wiener and freaked out over something that could have been settled with a "dude, don't do that during the scene, it's distracting and we have to do a re-shoot, which is a waste of time and money, If this continues you may have to find a new job".

Here is the freak out:

Now...since this has been out in cyberland for a while...I knew it wouldn't take long until someone did something to it...and oh, I was not wrong.

Some dude named DJ RevoLucian has remixed Bale's rant to dance music...and I don't care what anyone says, it kicks ass ! (not sure how I feel about the Barbara F'll see what I mean )
