Almost 2.....

I guess i blinked. I used to have this little guy I could hold with one hand and he fit perfectly on my chest. Now, that 'little guy' is about 35" tall, almost two and basically rules the house...and every playground we go to. No more does he need 'Da Da' to help him up a step and hold him while he heads down the slide....now it's run run run, climb climb climb, 'damn the big step and the fact that it's 10 feet off the ground, I'm doin it!' and zip, down the slide....time flies.

Any good apps out there?

I was eating up my lunch time looking for new apps and really didn't come across anything interesting. Any suggestions ?

Las Vegas

Here we go. The last man-cation is booked. I'm off to Vegas on the morning of April 8th. I've got a direct flight that lands me some time around 10:30am. I should be ready to hit the tables somewhere around 11:30ish. I'll probably just do poker for the day since my partner in crime doesn't show until midnight.
I'm booked in at Ballys. I haven't stayed there before but my friends have and it's alright (I've hit a number of the places on the strip in the past....Sahara, Imperial Palace, MGM, Bellagio, Flamingo). I'll do my best to see if I can charm myself an upgrade.
The goal on this trip is to come back in the black. The last time I was there (Jan 2009) the wife and I did awesome...all costs in, we only spent 50$ per day. We were killing it on the carnie games. Slots loved us. There was a 'Star Trek' Slot that pretty much on command spat out min 150$ every time we played it.
I'll do my best to update as I go....

The Idiocy of Anne Coulter

As you may have heard, Anne Coulter has recently been in Canada on a speaking tour discussing [cough] topics such as political correctness and free speech. Now, I'm sure at the beginning of her career she probably did focus on legitimate issues and topics and debated them with the purpose of educating people and learning something herself. Maybe. These days, she might as well just bill herself as a Howard Stern type speaker who's sole purpose to be a headline on TMZ or Perez Hilton and has nothing really relevant to say. Her statements are purely for shock value and to get attention. It seems to me her shows would be on par with a Ford Fairlane act circa 1990.

She claims to be the victim of a hate crime because someone at the U of O sent her a memo telling her she should educate herself on Canada's laws and be respectful and careful with what she says and yet during her speech she told the audience that Muslims shouldn't be able to fly, they should just use their magic carpets (a young Muslim student told her she didn't have a magic carpet to which Coulter replied 'ride a camel then'.....wow....not sure, but that seems pretty racist and equals spreading hate to me Anne....)

She is either 1 of too things. 1) She is so freakin advanced in her Dennis Miller Sarcastic political humor that dullards like me don't get it and miss the fact that what she is doing is a satirical extreme right wing speech to highlight issues with free speech and how political correctness has created reverse problems with discussing any topic.

2) She's a meat head looking for nothing but a headline by spewing the most ridiculous/outrageous crap that it will be picked up by every paper in North America so she can sell books and get attention.

I'd lean towards 2....

I would assume that, like ol' Ford, she'll be a flash in the pan and she'll disappear into obscurity. I think the Muslim community of Calgary had it right when they said 'we should treat her as if she were a child acting out, if we give it attention it will get worse, if we ignore it, it will go away'

Scott Pilgrim vs the World

Although Cera is not a character actor (he's the same guy in every movie), this one looks like it should be fun...and look at the directors track record before...Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead....

Inside voice outside voice

I'm always amazed at people who seem to have no idea how loud they are. And I'm not talking about drunk guys.

Case in point, three dudes sitting next to me using colorful language to describe setting their work trucks up. I would say you could clearly hear the f bombs from 40+ feet away. And it's not like they were yelling over some loud noise. It's fairly quiet here. They didn't seem to notice the 'keep it down' looks from the other people.

I just sat quiet and called them dummies .... In my inside voice.

Death of the man-cation = Vegas 2010

As i've said in the previous posts...the man-cation will die a quiet death this year. For those that don't know, the man-cation is what my wife branded the trips I take to the UK...these are the weekend blasts that I head over to visit as many pubs as I can in a 4 day period. Typically they were spring and fall. But, due to the fact that #2 will be here in 4 months, the man-cation has been put to rest....THAT BEING SAID (lolz...see previous post for why i laugh), I have carefully negotiated a funeral for the man-cation which will be taking place in Vegas on April 8th thru the 11th. We will say goodbye to this trusted and loyal friend as best we can. Please feel free to join the mourning ceremonies which will more than likely be at the Imperial Palace (damn place is a dump but it's the best deal going for a guy who goes to Vegas maybe once a year...and it's right central on the strip). But, I'm sure the mourning will spill into other venues so feel free to do what you need to do to cope with this passing.

I do have a feeling though, like any good movie that is set up for sequels, the man-cation will return....it may take years, but I believe, it will be back.......(and possibly angry.....)

2010....full of adventure

2010 will be full of adventure and excitement.

  1. The sequel arrives in July. This will add all sorts of fun/sleepless nights. River is already a handful and as far as I'm concerned is full on into the terrible two's. I'm not sayin' he's being a bad boy, it's more he's starting/continuing to assert his independence and really push boundaries (he'll climb anything and if there's music he'll dance when he gets to the top...it's freakin' funny). With River running around and both parents probably being sleep deprived, summer 2010 most likely will be a blur. We've already begun planning for who will be in which room...and we picked up a new pack and play/baby sleeper thingy (gotta love Sears Baby Days and Super Save Weekends !) that will be much more useful than the bassinet that River slept in. Unfortunately for #2, he'll be wearing pretty much 99.9% hand me downs for a number of years.
  2. Weddings weddings and more weddings. 2 of my post secondary buddies are getting hitched this year. One in the Grand Caymans in May and the other in Canmore in Oct. It looks like we'll have to miss the Caymans given that the wife won't be able to fly (for some reason she won't let me go alone....go figure). Also, the bro-n-laws and are getting hitched. The first will be in Sept on Houseboats in BC (I would normally say this should be very relaxin' but I'm not sure about this one...given we'll have the newbie....ah, just another adventure). The second isn't fully set, but I heard something about Hawaii...awesome...
  3. The death of man-cation. Given that there will now be 2 knee biters ruling the house, the days of me buggerin' off to Jolly Ol' England for a pint are pretty much over (i think it will require a very open minded wife, the newbie being off the boob, and some brave grand parents....not sure if those stars will align....we'll see). The man-cation will die a righteous death in Las Vegas on April 8th thru 11th. It had a great run. It will be missed. It will be replaced by 'Family Trip'
  4. New Hobby. I will be taking up more photography. I've always wanted to do it more. I had taken a black and white course years ago and enjoyed it. I've decided since there will be some savings in the pocket from the absence of the man-cation, I will do my research and find an appropriate camera for me.
  5. More adventure. There will be more exciting things, but I can't spill on all of it just yet.

(I wanted to put #6, spend my 6-49 41Million$ but some jerks from Edmonton and the east won it instead of me....jerks)

Lazy Sunday Post - from my wife's laptop

this laptop sucks...mostly because it's the one that the boy beats the hell out of...a bunch of keys are missing so it makes it painful to type...I am just THAT lazy i won't cross the room to get my laptop...
anyway, had a big weekend...I rented a Dodge Journey to check it out...as some of you may know, i have been contemplating buying a 'crossover' due to the fact that there will soon be 4 of us in the house *there is no way in hell i will buy a minivan even though i agree it would do the trick....it's just i gave most of my friends a hard time when they bought one and I will NOT eat crow*
I really like the EDGE...we had one on Vancouver Island last year and dug it. A friend turned me on to the Dodge Journey so I thought this weekend looked like as good a time as any...so we rented one and hit the highway.
I was impressed. I'll need to try out the EDGE again, but I think the affordability of the Journey may swing me.
We took the boy out to Canmore and halfassed hit some hiking trails (pictures later...again, too lazy to download).
We had a s**t lunch at THE WOOD in Canmore (avoid this place, you're not missing anything).
Finished off the weekend at the Zoo today...nice day for it. The boy had a great time. Growled at the Tigers, laughed at the Monkeys, played hard at the park.....
Ended the night with a movie....The 4th Kind (I'll review that later...this is the lazy post remember ?)
Back to work tomorrow....we're busy...the projects are stacking up. Everyone seems to be waking up from the sleep of 2009.
A couple notes from the weekend to leave you with:
  • Obama's health care bill seems to be going through......interesting
  • WTF happened to the Canadian Sledge team ?
  • I could care less about the dirty Tatoo'd skank Jesse James was with...and for that matter, anything about what Tiger was up to....is this really news ?
  • Will the Flames make the playoffs ? And if they don't which Sutter will get the chop ?
  • Thank the gods the cops caught that crazy beotch putting metal objects into food at the Calgary Coop....can you believe she was a loyal customer ?? WTF
  • Is it me, or does it seem strange and wrong that banks are showing huge profits when the country is coming out of a massive recession ?
  • Air Canada bitches that they can't put bums in seats, and yet a flight to London during slow season is 1100$....nope...I can't see why people aren't flying, can you ?

The Dangerous Book for Boys

Although this video is super cheesy, what it's advertising is awesome. We received this book from a friend for our boys first birthday. Basically, this is a book outlining a bunch of things that boys of yesteryear knew how to do and helicopter parents of today are too paranoid to let their kids try (or at least some of them). I for one have no problem with any of it and will encourage the boy to try them all.

Now that I'm a parent I'm amazed at how paranoid society has become...worrying about every little thing (not that I'll let the boy run around with scissors and drink anything he finds under the sink...I'm talking about playing on the stuff at the park, learning how to light a fire, getting dirty, playing hard, trying to do flips on a tramp without the side protectors) etc. I'm scared of the future outcome...what will these kids grow into when they haven't been taught some of these things along with understanding boundaries, including boundaries of pain. What I mean is...if I play like a jackass on the climby thing at the park and fall off and break my arm, I'll understand what I can and cannot do....but if my parents are there every step of the way, freaking out about everything, I won't have this knowledge. This applies to even more things...somehow PC attitudes and worrying about kids self esteem has gone WAAAAY too far to the extreme. Changing lunch time sports so that no one keeps score (so that no one loses) and not using red x's on tests or failing kids, in my opinion, will have the opposite effect. These kids are not learning to deal with rejection....none of us want that for our kids, but i don't want to have a kid who has no idea how to deal with this stuff that you find everyday in life, not to mention learning from it. For example, how will little Johnny react when he has never had to face rejection and his first girlfriend dumps him because little Stewie has a cooler car....or, what happens to little Johnny when he isn't picked to be on the high school basketball team....or what happens when little Johnny is not hired at the job he wants....etc. Life is full of this stuff....we have to prepare the new generation vs. coddling them and packing them in bubble wrap.

Anyway, back to the book. I can't wait until I bust a day off from work and me and the boy head out to burn some ants with a magnifiying glass and I teach him how to ride his bike with no hands....crazy fun times ahead.

A little groggy

Not only did I get my arse kicked at spin class on Saturday morning, the night out with the friends left me a little worse for wear on sunday. Then this whole daylight savings has me an hour behind. Needless to say tonight is an early one.

Freakin trains

Why is it trains in this city cross major intersections at 8am 12 noon and 5 pm?????

questions ?

  • If you sell me your product and part of the sales pitch is telling me how superior your product is over the competition, why then do you try to sell me an extended warranty ?
  • Shouldn't it be Anti-cough drops ?
  • Where did the word irregardless come from since it just means regardless ?
  • Do people use 'that being said' to completely negate and disregard what was just said ?
  • Why do people stand in a food line and wait until they're at the register to decide what they want ? What were they doing while standing in line ?
  • Doesn't it seem counterproductive to put the bitchiest person in your company as the customer service rep ?
  • Why do people complain about 90 cent per litre gas when they have no issue spending 1$ on a 500ml bottle of water ?

just a couple things that crossed my mind in the last 30 minutes.....

My music guilty pleasure - the 4 chords of ROCK !

I have a special place for the four chords of rock.....all tunes are usually cheesy, but catchy...almost every band in history has used the 4 chords (it's almost like they say...damn, we need a hit...HIT THE 4 CHORDS !)

Here's a good example of a band [Urge Overkill] that never really hit it big but I have always dug this tune...4 chords ? check ! cheesy ? check ! Catchy ? CHECK ! CRANK IT !

This is how I feel today

Lindsay Lohan has finally cracked

Lohan has finally cracked...or at least has now shown the world she's a paranoid schizophrenic. According to her (or at least the claims of her lawyers) the above commercial from E-TRADE is somehow referring to her...

Lohan’s lawyer, Stephanie Ovadia, said the actress has the same single-name recognition as Oprah or Madonna.
“Many celebrities are known by one name only, and E-Trade is using that knowledge to profit,” Ovadia said.
“They used the name Lindsay … This is a subliminal message. Everybody’s talking about it and saying it’s Lindsay Lohan.”
She says Lohan is owed $50 million in exemplary damages, plus another $50 million in compensatory damages

So what we have learned here is that if anyone says the name Lindsay or says anything about Lindsay you could only be referring to Lindsay Lohan....not any other girl named Lindsay (or fictional charcater named Lindsay)....that, or Lohan is so broke and has absolutely no prospects for future jobs, her life is in ruins, she should be medicated for being bipolar or schizo, that she thinks this lawsuit is 1) not frivolous 2) actually going to work and be a huge payday so she can keep partying and doing nothing and 3) won't hurt her image even more (is that even possible?)

I would assume that after the E-TRADE lawyers picked themselves up off the ground from laughing uncontrollably for 3 hours, they will be sending Lohan a gift basket for all the free advertising she just gave E-TRADE....along with a letter that says 'Piss off before we destroy you !....P.S. we loved you in mean girls'

To think....at one point I thought she was hot....now she's just become sad and on the top of my Celebrity Dead Pool list for 2010....

Weekend Playing

Weekend playing is hard work !

Great Quote - Sums up a lot of us

This is a great quote that sums up so much of what is happening 'out there'....

Tron Legacy - I think I just had a nerdgasm

The first official Tron Legacy Teaser Trailer is online.....and it looks AWESOME !

I read a post by someone who I hopes sums this movie up 'it looks like it's been made by someone who saw the original when they were 12 and are making it for 40 somethings....just what Lucas should have done'....

Go see it...NOW !....click here

Grass is greener

It's a universal thing. It has been there since you were a kid. The grass is always greener on the other side. This doesn't seem to change as you get older. It's had us for the last little while. We have been talking about the possibility of getting outta here and moving to somewhere else. We had looked at the possibility of moving to the east coast. While I don't think this is completely out of the question, it was thought that this might be a bit far for family to travel. But, anywhere we go will be extra travel for family so I think this will a fact regardless of where we go. There was talk of the west coast for a while (again, not out of the question yet)...now it seems to be interior BC.
Wherever we do pick must have a few simple criteria. 1) Reasonable real estate prices 2) A nearby international airport (2 hour drive is ok) 3) The usual needed things like hospitals, doctors, etc 4) the most important...a movie theater with first run flicks
Going back, I really did like the south shore of Nova Scotia. The downside is the hurricanes and winters. The west coast is also very nice...not too many downsides other than rain I suppose. Saskatchewan and Manitoba are out. Ontario is questionable. I'm told we'd die of taxes in Quebec.
I know a few people who have moved away, only to return...one was gone for about 6 weeks before coming right back. Is this a case of 'the grass is greener' ? Will we leave only to realize that we had it pretty good where we were and then come right back ?
Who knows...we'll find out when we get there I guess...and when is that ? We seem to be on the perpetual 3 year plan....we did say that we won't move once the boy has begun school, so the clock is ticking...that leaves us 4 years to make up our minds.

Moron Reporters

One of the best things about living in North America is that we have the right to free speech. People can get on a soapbox and spew off about anything they want. Of course, this comes with a downside.....any moron with an IQ lower than pile of poop can flap their gums about anything.

Case in point.....Mr. Gil Lebreton, a sports reporter for the Star-Tribune in Fort Worth Texas, is one of these low IQ morons. He had the privilege to be at the Vancouver Olympics and after his experience he decided the best comparison was to the 1936 Nazi Olympics. Not only is this disgusting on every level to Canadians, it also is offensive to WW II vets and people who lived through it. He goes on to make additional moronic statements about how people were only cheering on the Canadian athletes (ummm....of course we will cheer on the home town hero's ???) and that we only focused on Canadians...he did admit to not watching the TV coverage so I'm not sure where the blanket statement came from (I watched CTV and learned all about Apollo Ohno, and other non-Canadians..)

anyway...I could write a whole thing about what a lump of turd this guy is, but I think he does it himself in his article...and follow up apology which was lame at best.

Not so funny site - dumb people on the internet

I'm always amazed at how naive people are with their personal information on the Internet; specifically on social networks such as facebook. Some people list all of their info: where they're from, they're maiden name, where they went to high school, where they work, etc etc.....do people know I could get a credit card in their name with this info ???

Also, people broadcast when they're going on vacation and when they are away from their houses....I've been guilty of this myself, but I don't broadcast my personal info or where I live...also I have nothing to steal except some star wars t-shirts and some old worn out underwear.

but many people DO have tons to steal...and this is where a this site comes in. PLEASE ROB ME it likes to point out the stupidity of people with what they post on the Internet.
I'm curious about the liability and if they will be sued if someone does get robbed because of their site....hmmmmm

PEOPLE ! LISTEN UP ! DON'T PUT PERSONAL INFO IN SOCIAL SITES ! BE SMART ! or your info will pop up on sites like this and you'll get back from your weekend in Vegas to an empty house that looks like something out of Animal House and possibly a bunch of bills for credit cards you didn't apply for by some dude walking around buying all sorts of stuff with your identity....
Maybe this is the new Darwinism...
